DATE

Tilt Architecture & Design partnered with The Foothill Catalog Foundation (TFCF) to design a "California Ranch" inspired home for displaced Altadena residents following the 2025 tragic wildfire in Los Angeles. TFCF is a California nonprofit public benefit organization that is currently in the process of developing a subsidized, affordable home catalog (similar to the Sears catalog model from the 20th century) that will allow displaced homeowners to remain on their property. The organization is intent on rebuilding Altadena by retaining its rich architectural history and identity, while also providing financial assistance for homeowners who may otherwise not have the means to re-build their homes.
For the "California Ranch" catalog style, Tilt wanted to highlight the style's unique relationship to the outside. Typically ranch style homes emulate rural living, which is a unique challenge on a skinny, long LA lot. This layout emphasizes a private courtyard, inviting you to walk through the French doors and live both inside and outside. The entrance brings you through a breezeway which opens up into a sunny entry with views directly into the private courtyard. Turning the corner is the kitchen, living room and dining room flanking the large courtyard expanse, and finally the bedrooms and den are tucked in the back for privacy with ample access to the backyard. The primary bedroom sits quietly at the front of the house, with a patio and en-suite bathroom and walk-in-closet. The layout feels large and sprawling like a country ranch, despite its smaller footprint (under 3000sf) and urban environment.
Below is Tilt's submission for the concept brochure, which was featured by TFCF at their community Design Showcase event in May 2025.
